CONCERTO DIVISION

In partnership with the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra City Music Center announces a two-part Concerto Competition. The preliminary stage will take place on Friday March 6 beginning at 4:00 pm. It is open to piano, strings and winds. Those contestants who live further than 200 miles may arrange to submit a tape of the audition piece with accompanist. This is due with the application on February 21, 2009.

Up to six finalists will perform with the City Music Center Chamber Orchestra at a public concert under the direction of Artistic Director, Jeff Turner. One Winner will be announced directly after the concert. The concert will take place on Saturday April 4 TBA.

A rehearsal for the Finalist Concert will take place on Saturday April 4, 2009.

The Winner of the Concerto Division will perform during the 2009/10 season with the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra in an outreach or education concert. The scheduling for the performance and the repertory will be determined by the PSO management.

Application Fee: $35

Prizes
First prize: $500—underwritten by Symphony North Finalists will receive $100 each

• Age: 18 years and under
• Memorization required
• Required piece: One movement from standard concerto repertory. Double or triple concerti are allowed.
• Accompanist: required
• Audition time: 10 minutes


SOLO DIVISIONS

• One work from Baroque or Classical Period
• One piece from Romantic or Modern Period

10 to 12 years
• One work from Baroque or Classical Period
• One piece from Romantic or Modern Period

13 to 15 years
• One work from Baroque or Classical Period
• One piece from Romantic or Modern Period

16 to 18 years
• One work from Baroque or Classical Period
• One piece from Romantic or Modern Period
• All works must be performed from memory.
• No repeats
• No simplified version, no popular music and no concerti.
• All winners will play at Winners' Recital. The piece will be chosen by the judge. Please note: in consideration of the overall length of the recital a shorter piece might be chosen by judge.

• Application fee: $35.

Violin, Viola, Cello, Double Bass, Guitar and Harp

CHAMBER MUSIC DIVISION

Open to Any Ensemble
Age Categories and Repertoire Requirements

• Age: 18 and under
• One work of any style no longer than ten minutes.
• All members of ensembles must not be older than 18 years.
• No double or triple concerti
• No repeats
• All winners will play at Winners’ Recital.

Application Fee: $30 per person.

Prizes
First Prize: $300 per group
Second Prize: $200 per group



RULES AND REGULATIONS

• Application Fees: Solo and Concert Divisions $35 Chamber Music Division $30 per participant

• Applicant’s age as of March 1, 2009 will determine the age division.

• Previous first prize winners may choose to compete in a higher age division but not in the same or lower age division.

• Registration fee is not refundable.

• Applicants must not have graduated from high school.

• Works to be performed must be chosen from the required repertoire; no substitutions will be allowed.

• The Director reserves the right to limit the number of applicants in any category, or to add additional audition times in event of a large number of competitors, or to cancel a category with fewer than four auditionees.

• Contestants will be judged on overall musicianship, individual sense of style, technical proficiency and general performance impressions.

• The time allowed for auditions is 5 minutes for 6 to 9, and 10 to 12 years age categories and 10 minutes for 13 to 15 and 16 to 18 years age categories. The judges reserve the right to stop the contestant at any time during or before the allowed time has elapsed. The judge will also stop the contestant if a program exceeds the allowed time.

• The decision of the judges will be final. This includes the decision to award, not to award, or to split all prizes. A winner who cannot attend the Winners’ Recital will be disqualified.

• Applicants will be notified of audition time by mail.

• A Duquesne University staff pianist will be available for one rehearsal and the audition for $60. Accompanist fee must accompany the registration form.
